Les émotions semblent former un domaine de recherche hétérogène. Des états assez différents, comme le sentiment de culpabilité, la joie et la surprise, mais aussi la peur et la colère, sont en général jugés appartenir à cette catégorie. De plus, il n'existe pas de science unifiée des émotions. Une pluralité de disciplines, allant de la philosophie à la neurologie en passant par la biologie, l'éthologie, l'anthropologie, la psychologie et la sociologie, entre autres, s'intéresse en effet aux émotions. Chacune de ces disciplines présupposent, que ce soit de manière explicite ou non, une conception spécifique de la nature des émotions.
