Margaret Gilbert

Actualité
I am working on monographs in two areas: the nature of rights, in particular those rights that give one the standing to demand of one or more other persons that they act in certain way and the question whether there is a viable concept of collective moral responsibility, and if so, the relationship between such responsibility and that of the individual members of the collectivity in question. My reflections on these topics derive from the thesis of my 1989 book On Social Facts that social groups and other central social phenomena are founded in a joint commitment of particular persons.
L'auteur par lui-même
Margaret Gilbert attended the University of Cambridge (Girton College) where she took a B.A. in classics and philosophy, and the University of Oxford (St. Anne's College) where she took a B. Phil. in Philosophy. She later held research posts at two Oxford colleges and received her doctorate from Oxford for a thesis entitled "On Social Facts" (1978) that was the first extended treatment of the nature of social phenomena within contemporary analytic philosophy. Its theses were developed in dialogue with the sociologists Emile Durkheim, Georg Simmel and Max Weber. She has lectured widely in the United States, Europe, and Scandinavia, and has held visiting research and teaching positions at many universities including Princeton, U.C.L.A., Oxford, and King's College, London.
